Good books and their reviews

I have read many books ( definitely not bragging) I love them, I live in them, I breathe them, I sleep with them in my head.

Healer of Carthage

Title:  Healer of Carthage (The Carthage Chronicles #1)

Author:  Lynne Gentry

Pages:  373

Year:  2014

Publisher:  Howard Books

Lisbeth Hastings is a first-year resident, fulfilling her mother’s dream for her to become a doctor, or is it her own dream?  Her mother left her and her father 23 years ago without a word.  Now at age 28, Lisbeth wonders if she is really cut out to be a doctor after she is put on probation due to a missed diagnosis resulting in a death.  She receives a letter from her archaeologist father summoning her to his dig as he has found her mother.  What does he mean by “found your mother”?  The letter states nothing else.  Lisbeth is on suspension so she has time off and decides to visit her father.  While exploring the same cave her mother and father were exploring when her mother disappeared, Lisbeth is suddenly ripped from the 21st century and plunged into the 3rd century brutal Roman world in Carthage.

Cyprianus Thracius is a Roman barrister recently converted to Christianity.  He buys slaves from the slave market to save them from misery as the property of the proconsul of Carthage, Aspasius.  Aspasius is a cruel and evil man.  He owns the current healer of Carthage, who he also frequently abuses.  Lisbeth finds herself on the block at the slave market about to be purchased by Aspasius, but Cyprian shows up to save her from a fate worse than death.  Lisbeth is taken to Cyprian’s home and soon has to put her medical training to use.  She quickly meets the healer of Carthage, who is also a convert to Christianity.  Lisbeth’s journey to 3rd century Carthage holds lots of surprises for her.

Negatives:  The story toward the end talks about Lisbeth’s love of God, but I didn’t see much evidence of this spiritual transformation throughout the story.  I mean she had the bishop living right in her home and she didn’t talk to him about faith, Jesus, or anything spiritual.  She is a scientist and they question things; it is in their nature.  So why didn’t she ask anyone about God?  Her newfound faith just didn’t seem realistic.

Positives:  I did think the premise of the story was intriguing and the historical research interwoven in the story was very interesting.  I enjoyed the romance between Lisbeth and Cyprian.  I also liked that Lisbeth’s life with her archeologist father allowed her to see the ruins in the present day, but the actuality of what they really looked like in the 3rd century.  My dream job would be as an archeologist and I enjoy history, so I loved all those references.

My rating is 4 stars.

SPOILER ALERT!

Some of the books I have read from new years, and/or reading

Knife of Dreams - Robert Jordan Voyage of Slaves - Brian Jacques THE COMPLETE SHERLOCK HOLMES COLLECTION OF NOVELS AND STORIES (illustrated, complete, and unabridged with the original illustrations) - Arthur Conan Doyle The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway Mississippi Trial, 1955 - Chris Crowe Physick Book of Deliverance Dane (Hardcover, 2009) - Pirate Latitudes - Michael Crichton All of Her Men - Lourdes Bernabe The Pirate Bride - Shannon Drake Sense and Sensibility (with the original watercolor illustrations by C.E. Brock) - C.E. Brock, Jane Austen

These books are all amazing though Ernest Hemingway probably wrote the book " Old Man And The Sea" to help me fall asleep. It is an interesting book, but... I had a hard time concentrating on his story besides the few pages in the beginning of the book before The Old Man left and when he returned, all I can say is it calmed me very much and such a relaxing book.

So I couldn't add all the books so I'll add a pic of all of them at the end.

I really don't know who is reading this, or how they could ever be interested in the melancholy rambling of mine, but thank you anyway, for reading at keeping in track.

Comment if you liked the books, and I can give you a few tips on how to win a giveaway (not of these books), so comment, share, like reblog, or whatever it is.

Thank you all again, and enjoy.

A list of books I'm reading right now

Reblogged from Good books and their reviews:

    Salutations everyone,

Before I begin telling you about what I think about the books I'm reading right now, I'd like to say that I'm so new to this blogging thing, and this site. So if I do something wrong feel free to criticize me. I grow from criticism.

I am a person that reads books just because I can't live without them, I am intrigued by the stories, plots, characters, and so on and so forth. I've been reading books in different languages, and entering new worlds while doing so. I love books that have pirates in them or mostly mysteries, hence my obsession with Sherlock Holmes, I am always interesting in american classics, British classics and Russian classics. I also have a passion for books set in history, historical fiction, and nonfiction. I don't limit myself on reading only mysteries, and historical fiction books, and classics.

At the moment I am reading five books interchangeably.

  •             The first book is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, I have only read to 257th page but I like it so far. Its interesting, and I can relate to, that sounds a bit strange that I can relate to a classic.

As I have mentioned before I like pirate books, and I'm reading one by

Shannon Drake, The Pirate Bride, I have only read a chapter out of it, but I already love the setting of the book.

A historical fiction is of course included in my selection, it is by Chris Crowe, Mississippi Trial, 1995, also a very interesting, and intriguing novel, its a bit of a sad book also, at least, I feel that way.

I have mentioned that I am obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, so obsessed that I have purchased a very heavy book, with all of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Arthur Conan Doyle sure knows how to get me hooked on his books. I guess I don't have to put in a piece of my mind, you all already know of him.

Last but not least I have recently purchased another book also, What Remains of Heaven by C.S. Harris, I have not had the pleasure in reading it yet, I just couldn't resist to purchase it the cover looks amazing, so of course it drew me in.
